- With Texas becoming part of the United States, many Americans, primarily from the South, moved in search of cheap land and opportunity.
- Many of the farmers who came from the South brought their slaves.
- Anglo-Americans came toTexas seeking affordable land.
- Mexicans/Tejanos came to Texas to defend and expand their territory
- Germans came to Texas seeking political and religious freedom, as well as economic opportunities.
- Other European groups were leaving countries facing disease and famine.
- Native Texans were forced to leave East Texas and onto reservations in West Texas.
- Not all immigrant groups came to Texas for opportunity or freedom.
